Earthquake Of 6.1 Magnitude Strikes Off Indonesia's Sumatra Island: USGS

Jakarta: A massive earthquake measuring 6.1 magnitude on the Richter scale struck off Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). 

Where did the earthquake happen? 

The tremor has hit in waters near Sumatra, a region that frequently experiences seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where several tectonic plates converge. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

How intense was the blow?

The intensity of the earthquake was measured at around 6.1 on the Richter scale. It was an earthquake of strong intensity. Tremors were felt for a long time in the region.

Where was the earthquake felt?

According to the USGS, the tremor occurred 65 kilometres southeast of Sinabang.

Indonesia is part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire", a region which is known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, making it particularly vulnerable to seismic events.

The earthquake hit off the island's west coast and was felt as far away as North Sumatra, the authorities said, that prompted people to come outdoors.

Was there any damage done?

There are currently no reports of damage or death reported due to the earthquake. No major collapse has been reported. The administration has started investigations in many areas. People are being appealed to remain alert. Further updates are awaited.
